Traversing Sensuality

This apsara (celestial nymph) was sculpted during the 8th century AD by the Ganga Pratihara School and is coming from Etah in Uttar Pradesh before resting in the Bharat Kala Bhavan, the Art and Archaeological Museum of Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi (Benaras).

Under the Moon’s Effulgence

“Although the effulgence of the moon is brilliant initially at night, in the daytime it fades away.
Similarly, although the lotus is beautiful during the daytime, at night it closes.
But, O My friend, the face of My most dear Srimati Radharani is always bright and beautiful, both day and night.
Therefore, to what can Her face be compared?”

This statue of a Toilet Bearer was sculpted during the Kushana period in the second century A.D. and was coming from Diyara (Faizabad) before resting for ever in the Bharat Kala Bhavan, the Art and Archaeological Museum of Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi (Benaras).
Several things in this sculpture remind Goddess Radha, the companion of Lord Krishna.
