“I’m looking for the unexpected.
I’m looking for things I’ve never seen before.”
(Robert Mapplethorpe – American photographer, 1946–1989)

Jonathan is a French wannabe actor who wants to perform on theatre stage on the footsteps of his family.
He has Caribbean roots with a West Indian background from Guadeloupe and Indian ancestors from Pondicherry.
This picture was shot during his first modeling photo session as we were building up his portfolio and it was a promising beginning…

“Mountains are to the rest of the body of the earth, what violent muscular action is to the body of man. The muscles and tendons of its anatomy are, in the mountain, brought out with force and convulsive energy, full of expression, passion, and strength.”
(John Ruskin – English art critic, 1819–1900)

This bodybuilder is one of the models posing for the Red Halo collection this season.
As usual the photo session took place at the upper terrace of our office in Varanasi (Benaras).
Once it was finished he asked me to take a few pictures like this for fun’s sake…

“Composition must be one of our constant preoccupations, but at the moment of shooting it can stem only from our intuition, for we are out to capture the fugitive moment, and all the interrelationships involved are on the move.”
(Henri Cartier-Bresson – French photographer, 1908–2004)

This picture was shot at Munshi Ghat along the Ganges in Varanasi (Benaras).
After taking a bath in the holy waters this man was drying under the early summer sun just after dawn.

“It`s not how old you are, it`s how you are old.”
(Jules Renard – French author, 1864–1910)

This lady came from South India in order to worship the Ganges in Varanasi (Benaras).
After taking a bath in the holy waters, she was styling her long white hair under the sun.
The quintessence of femininity was visible through her graceful gestures…she was beautiful…

“Are you looking for gold, friend?
Look around you; anything useful to you is pure gold, pure silver!”
(Mehmet Murat ildan – Turkish author, b.1965)

This picture was shot at Scindia ghat in Varanasi (Benaras).
Two friends were finishing their daily yoga exercises in the river.
It was at dawn when reality is still foggy with a sprinkle of dreams and allows the holy waters of the Ganges to become gold…

“I put a spell on you.
Lord! Lord! Lord!
….’Cause you’re mine, yeah.
I can’t stand the things that you do
When you’re foolin’ around…”
(from “I Put A Spell On You”, Lyrics By Jay Hawkins)

I often meet this young man nearby Nepali ghat along the Ganges in Varanasi (Benaras) whenever he comes to bath a herd of water buffalos in the end of the afternoon…

“You feel your strength in the experience of pain.”
(Jim Morrison – American singer-songwriter and poet, 1943-1971)

Like many men in Varanasi (Benaras) this pehlwan (Indian wrestler) comes to an akhara every morning at dawn or before sunset in order to perform his daily physical training routine.
For this training they use heavy club-lifting like “gadas”which are a way of testing strength and balance.
The mace is associated to the Indian god of strength, Hanuman, who is almost never depicted without one.

“Looking back on my life, I sigh.
The caprice of youth goes with the wind, I’ve no regrets.”
(“Rooftop Soliloquy” by Roman Payne)

Sometimes in summer this young man comes to rest for a moment on the stairs of a Vishnu temple which stands under Nepali ghat.
This location allows him to keep on eye on the herd of water buffalos which he is taking care of.
Most of the time he has to jump in the holy waters of the Ganges when the cattle refuses to leave.
I often take some pictures of him and his animals and once in a while he also comes to the akhara nearby where he is training for a short while.
