The Bird with two necks

Recently I met several kids who wanted portraits.
Most of them are the children of people I am working with.
I was trying to put a few words under my images and by chance I have been reading tales from ancient Indian literature, the Panchatantra (पञ्चतन्त्र).
Those tales among other things inspired Jean de la Fontaine for his famous “Fables”.

This boy’s father has a store at the ground floor of the building were stands the Bivi Razaia Masjid which is a small mosque located in the chawk of Varanasi (Benaras).
On the upper terrace there is also a little workshop making the dyeing process on silk saris.
This is where I took this picture of Abdulaim and his friends, one afternoon, after school.

“The Bird with two necks”(from the Panchatantra)
Once upon a time there lived a special kind of bird which had two necks and shared a common stomach.
One day, one of the heads found a jar of nectar, and on seeing this the other head also wanted to taste the nectar but the first neck refused to let it have it.
Enraged, the other neck soon found a jar of poison and it consumed it.
The poison reached the common stomach and both the necks perished.
(MORAL: Sharing of a good thing with others is always good)
