In Varanasi (Benaras) there is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva between Scindia ghat and Manikarnika ghat which doesn’t look like any other in the city because of its amazing sculptures with angels which are all around the shrine playing different music instruments.
This place is a kind of gate to after death as the cremation ghat is underneath with funeral pyres burning day and night.
It is not easy to climb the high and narrow staircase plunged in total darkness.
However each stair allows to ascend towards the light and to take the time to elevate oneself…

“Here’s another way to put it: You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world.
God is not a secret to be kept.
We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill.
If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you?
I’m putting you on a light stand.
Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives.
By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.”
(From the Bible – Matthew 5:13-20, “The Message”)

One afternoon during summer I was walking in a narrow street of the oldest part of Varanasi (Benaras) and I saw this staircase with a simple jali from where the light was coming in.
I stayed inside for a few minutes in order to enjoy the air which was streaming out there.

“In photography, the smallest thing can be a great subject.
The little, human detail can become a Leitmotiv.”
(Henri Cartier-Bresson – French photographe, 1908–2004)

This chai wallah was leaving Bhonsala ghat in Varanasi (Benaras) and was stepping towards the city…

“I will love the light for it shows me the way, yet I will endure the darkness because it shows me the stars.”

This is the staircase of a building in Chandni Chowk where the post Office stands on the first floor.
Following the light takes you to another world where time is frozen.
People there forgot to step in our century, Old Delhi dwellers are real magicians defying with atmosphere, hours, elegance, literature and poetry…
