“And thou, son of man, take thee a sharp knife, take thee a barber’s razor, and cause it to pass upon thine head and upon thy beard: then take thee balances to weigh, and divide the hair.”
(From the Bible)

This was shot at the other side of the Ganges , on the road leading to Ramnagar which faces Varanasi (Benaras).
The barber was shaving under a tree where an amazing light was finding its way through the leaves.
It was still early in the morning and all around it was easy to feel the first appearance of daylight in the day.

Imagination at the Wind’s Will

“Imagination is like a lofty building reared to meet the sky – fancy is a balloon that soars at the wind’s will”
(Frank Gelett Burgess – American artist, poet and author, 1866 – 1951)

This is the 500 years old Durga Temple (मुगलसराय सिटी), located in Ramnagar on the opposite bank to Varanasi (Benaras).
We came by boat, it was a long trip then and we had to find a rickshaw in order to reach that place which was far away.
At the gate a pandit refused to let us go in because it was time for him to have a nap.
Hopefully Phileas Fogg offered to join him in his balloon in order to see that amazing temple from the sky above the clouds.

An Orange Delight

An Orange Delight

“When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight.” (Kahlil Gibran – Lebanese American artist, poet, and writer, 1883 – 1931) Those ladies came in front of the main door of Ramnagar fort which is still the residence of the maharajas of Varanasi (Benaras) and which is lying across river Ganga beyond Asi Ghat. My eye was attracted by the shades of orange. There is something sorrowful in this place, a kind of melancholy, maybe this feeling comes from the state of decay of the palace which used to be a splendor once upon a time…

As Handsome Does

As Handsome Does

“Handsome is as handsome does.”
J.R.R. Tolkien (English Writer and Author of richly inventive epic fantasy The Lord of the Rings, 1892-1973)

This is my friend Anand who became our favourite model since a few season for our collection catalogues.
I took this picture on his motorboat last morning, while he was driving me from the palace of the Maharaja of Benares which is Ramnagar back to Varanasi (Benaras).
He opened this big umbrella in order to avoid the heat of the sun which was reflecting on the Ganges, temperature was then around 47°.

“Here Comes The Sun”

"Here Comes The Sun"

“…Little darling, the smiles returning to the faces
Little darling, it seems like years since it’s been here
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun
and I say it’s all right …”

Last morning a few lyrics from “Here Comes The Sun” by The Beatles came to my mind as I was reaching the bank of Ramnagar which is facing Varanasi (Benaras).
A few kids who were swimming in the Ganges came towards Anand’s boat, they were happy and smiling like summer sunshines and I could almost forget that it was very hot.
Temperature has reached 47° since a few days…
