“Colours have a beauty of their own which must be preserved, as one strives to preserve tonal quality in music. It is a question of organization and construction which is sensitive to maintaining this beautiful freshness of colour…
Colour is never a question of quantity, but of choice.”
(From Matisse’s essay “The Role and Modalities of Colour”, 1945)

At sunrise this lady was drying a few sarees after washing them in the holy waters of the Ganges in Varanasi (Benaras).
She was a pilgrim coming from the other part of the country, she was probably staying in one of the ashrams nearby.
Watching her doing her laundry and spreading those bright colours which was a happy moment as it was bringing life to Panchganga Ghat.

“If we continuously maintain self awareness, we will be able to experience peace and happiness.”
(Mātā Amṛtānandamayī Devī, also known as Amma – Hindu spiritual leader and teacher, born in 1953)

This was shot at Main ghat in Vanarasi (Benaras), I took this picture for my friend Dom with whom I went several times to receive Darshan from Amma.
I always see a picture of “The Hugging Saint” standing on this wall like the one on this old fridge and I don’t think that this is a coincidence anymore…
In my quest of peace and happiness there are so many things that seem to merge there at a few meters of the holy wayers of the Ganges…

This is a link to another picture shot there 4 years ago;   http://wp.me/prA9v-1F

No quote with this picture but one simple message:
“Nowadays breast cancer can be cured if it is diagnosed in time”.
Spread the word, you can save lives.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

This picture was shot at sunrise near Assi ghat along the Ganges in Varanasi (Benaras).
I dreamt that this lady adjusting her sari after taking a bath in the holy waters was receiving pink particles in order to protect her from cancer.
Each year “Pink for October” allows me to make pictures like this.
It is a way to pay a tribute to those many women who are fighting and to those like my mother who are not there anymore.

Pieces of Cloud in  the Sunlight

“This is how I would die into the love I have for you:
As pieces of cloud dissolve in Sunlight.”
(Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Balkhi, known as Jelaluddin Rumi – Persian poet, jurist, theologian, and mystic, 1207–1273)

My friend Anand was rowing a boat on the Ganges, we left Varanasi (Benaras) and we were crossing the river on the way to Ramnagar.

“There is nothing to stop me,
from getting lost,
anywhere at all,
if only I make a wish in my mind.
So I open the wings of my song,
I go beyond the stony wilderness of fairy tales,
I lose my way and reach some far away place,
where silence reigns.
I get to know the “Champa” flower in “Parul” grove
all in my own mind.
There is nothing to stop me,
from getting lost,
anywhere at all,
when the wings of my songs are afloat.
As the sun sets in the horizon,
when masses of clouds look like flowers in the sky,
I float away somewhere far off.
And in my mind,
I burst open the closed door, of a fairy tale home.“
(by Rabindranath Tagore)

This is another glimpse of Varanasi (Benaras), the Eternal city, shot at dusk from Scindia ghat along the holy waters of the Ganges.
A few years ago I was reading those words by Tagore, I kept the first sentence in my note book without obvious reason.
Today as time has passed swiftly, I know that there is nothing to stop me from getting lost in Benaras…

“I think it was during this journey that the image became detached, removed from all the rest.
It might have existed, a photograph might have been taken, just like any other, somewhere else, in other circumstances.
But it wasn’t.
The subject was too slight.
Who would have thought of such a thing?
The photograph could only have been taken if someone could have known in advance how important it was to be in my life, that event, that crossing of the river.
But while it was happening, no one even knew of its existence.
Except God.
And that’s why—it couldn’t have been otherwise—the image doesn’t exist.
It was omitted.
Forgotten.
It never was detached or removed from all the rest.
And it’s to this, this failure to have been created, that the image owes its virtue: the virtue of representing, of being the creator of, an absolute.”
(From “The Lover” by Marguerite Duras – French writer and film director, 1914–1996)

This picture was shot recently along the Ganges in Varanasi (Benaras), it was at dusk when the holy waters are wrapped in a silver coat.
