I want only to capture a minute part of reality.”

I WISH EVERYONE A HAPPY DIWALI AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR WITH LOVE, PEACE AND PROSPERITY…

“May you all attain full inner illumination!
May the supreme light of lights enlighten your understanding!
May you all attain the inexhaustible spiritual wealth of the Self!
May you all prosper gloriously on the material as well as spiritual planes!”
(from the writings of Swami Sivananda Saraswati – Hindu spiritual teacher, 1887–1963)

This is also the opportunity to thank you all for commenting my pictures the way you do and for this amazing support which always gives me the energy to carry on my work…
A new year is starting in India and I want to share with you more emotions with the colours of life which keep on coming in front of my lens…

(This picture was shot in Varanasi (Benaras) during Dev Diwali as Anand was taking all of us on his boat for a ride along the Ganges).

This picture was shot early in the moning in Chandni Chowk, one of the oldest and busiest markets in Old Delhi, the city of Djinns.
This typically congested scene along Chawri Bazar makes the heart of the city always busy and full of life…

“Of all forms of expression, photography is the only one which seizes the instant in its flight.”
(Henri Cartier-Bresson – French photographe, 1908–2004)

Those young men formed a human pyramid in the holy waters of the Ganges in Varanasi (benaras).
It was at Panchaganga ghat which is one of the water-front sacred sites of the Eternel city.
As the name indicates this place is supposed to be the confluence of five rivers such as the Ganges, the Yamuna, the Saraswati, the Kirana and the Dhupapapa.
During summers (May-June) people come there early in the morning in order to find a kind of freshness.

“With my mouth I speak slander, day and night.
I spy on the houses of others – I am such a wretched low-life !
Unfulfilled sexual desire and unresolved anger dwell in my body, like the outcasts who cremate the dead.
I live as a wild hunter, O Creator !”
(From the Guru Granth Sahib – the religious text of Sikhism)

This is a picture of the burning ghats of Manikarnika shot at sunset from a boat on the holy waters of the Ganges in Varanasi (Benaras).
Antyesti, the Last Rite, is an important Sanskara, sacrament of Hindu society
According Hinduism cremation is releases an individual’s spiritual essence from its transitory physical body so it can be reborn.
If it is not done or not done properly, it is thought, the soul will be disturbed and not find its way to its proper place in the afterlife and come back and haunt living relatives…

“This is the ultimate end of man, to find the One which is in him; which is his truth, which is his soul; the key with which he opens the gate of the spiritual life, the heavenly kingdom.”
(Rabindranath Tagore – Indian Poet, Playwright and Essayist, Won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913, 1861-1941)

This man was sitting at the gate of the center of the universe which is the shrine standing at Manikarnika Ghat in Varanasi (Benaras) where burns the oldest fire since the begining of mankind.
This is the place where any Hindu comes face to face with life and death, it is called “the great cremation ground” (Mahasmasana) and a legend says that there Lord Shiva gives Taraka mantra ( “Prayer of the crossing”) in the ear of the dead.
The name Manikarnika derives its origin from the dropping rings of Siva during His transcendental dance here.
“Having become Time itself, I destroy the world here, O Goddess !” (Lord Shiva – Padma Purana 1.33.14)

“Here Comes The Sun”

"Here Comes The Sun"

“…Little darling, the smiles returning to the faces
Little darling, it seems like years since it’s been here
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun
and I say it’s all right …”

Last morning a few lyrics from “Here Comes The Sun” by The Beatles came to my mind as I was reaching the bank of Ramnagar which is facing Varanasi (Benaras).
A few kids who were swimming in the Ganges came towards Anand’s boat, they were happy and smiling like summer sunshines and I could almost forget that it was very hot.
Temperature has reached 47° since a few days…
