“Beauty is something wonderful and strange that the artist fashions out of the chaos of the world in the torment of his soul.”
(William Somerset Maugham – English Writer, 1874-1965)

Anand is wrapped in a silk scarf made with a hand embroidery.
This artcraft is done by ladies involved in several workshops that we have settled with GURIA, a Human Rights organisation fighting against the sexual exploitation of women and children, particularly those forced into prostitution and trafficking.
Each scarf is unique and made in sarees provided by many women in Benaras who take this opportunity to get rid of pieces that they brought in order to celebrate happy moments, festivals or parties.
Those accessories carry traces of happiness in their yarns…
Anand, our icon model, shows his body for the purpose of this brotherhood and happiness chain as this is a way to catch the attention on this fight for Human Rights and human dignity.
(Scarf style “Kingdom” – 100% silk – Collection RED HALO)

“Let the ascetics sing of the garden of Paradise
We who dwell in the true ecstasy can forget their vase-tamed bouquet.

In our hall of mirrors, the map of the one Face appears
As the sun’s splendor would spangle a world made of dew.

Hidden in this image is also its end,
As peasants’ lives harbor revolt and unthreshed corn sparks with fire.

Hidden in my silence are a thousand abandoned longings:
My words the darkened oil lamp on a stranger’s unspeaking grave.

Ghalib, the road of change is before you always:
The only line stitching this world’s scattered parts.”
(Mirza Ghalib – born Mirza Asadullah Beg Khan, Indian poet, 1797-1869)

This picture was shot in Old Delhi during a traffic jam.
From the window of my car I could see this rickshaw wallah’s face reflecting into the mirror of his auto and I made a connection to a portrait of Ghalib which I had in mind…

“Hidden from all eyes and ears
let us tell each other of our soul.
Smile like a rose with no lips
and keep silent like a thought.
Let us speak silently the secret like Spirit and avoid talkers who use words in vain.
Let us join our hands
listen to every flutter of our heart
let us become one in silence.
Divine destiny knows our fate to the last detail let our story be told in a silent way.”
(Ghazal 1540 by Rumi)

“It is said that no star is a heroine to her makeup artist.”
(Richard Corliss – American journalist)

This is a backstage glimpse from a window into the makeup room before the show of a school in Bhadohi in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh at 45 KM from Varanasi (Benaras).
Several kids wearing gorgeous costums were waiting in line in front of the make-up artist who was changing their features in order to make them play specific characters.
This little girl was getting ready to perfom a traditional dance.
The light was provided by a single bulb from the ceiling in the room and allowed to have make a series of pictures with no editing.

“The world is a looking-glass, and gives back to every man the reflection of his own face.
Frown at it, and it will in turn look sourly upon you; laugh at it and with it, and it is a jolly kind companion.”
(William Makepeace Thackeray – Indian born English Author and Novelist of ‘Vanity Fair’, 1811-1863)

As I was leaving the workshop of some weavers with whom I am working in Pili Kothi, an area of Varanasi (Benaras), I saw this young man who had an haircut in the street.
He was looking in the mirror and gave me a side glance in order to know if the work was well done.
I guess he must have felt much more reassured when he saw me taking a few pictures…

“Silence is the root of everything.
If you spiral into it’s void a hundred voices will thunder messages you long to hear.”
(Jalāl ad-Dīn Rumi – Sufi mystic & poet, 1207-1273)

On the Agra-Delhi highway, near Vrindavan, I saw this lady standing in a truck.
A few minutes earlier we met at a gaz station, she was among a group of villagers and we were all pouring water from a fontain in order to refresh as the heat was becoming unbearable.
We did’t share a word but everyone allowed me to take several pictures.
They were happy.
When I saw her in the back of the truck I could almost listen to those “hundred voices” coming from the silence of her eyes…

“Om Sarva Mangal Manglaye Shivay Sarvaarth Sadhike
Sharanye Trayambake Gauri Narayaani Namostu Te”
“Oh the divine couple Shiva Parvati !
O ! Thee, the protectors of this universe,
Along with Lords Brahma and Vishnu
We pray to You for our well-being, prosperity and the enlightenment of our souls.”
(Lord Shiva Prarthana Prayer)

The power or energy of Shiva is Shakti, his spouse, of which Parvati is probably the most popular form.
Lord Shiva And Mata Parvati Ji are often shown sitting in happy, intimate embrace.
After their marriage, they left for mount Kailash and immersed themselves completely in a sexual intercourse so strong that the deity of desire Kama was reborn when their sweat mingles with his ashes.
Their love was so intense that it shook the cosmos and frightened even the gods…

This is a recent sculpture which stands in the “Kingdom of Dreams” complex in Gurgaon, it is inspired by a piece from the 11th-12th c.)
