Those past days I was too busy to make a picture with me in order to celebrate my 10 000 new viewers like I always do.
Thank YOU all, you have been 216 284 Flickr viewers, 65 232 Ipernity viewers and 85 719 visitors on my Worpress photo-blog.
I really appreciate your support, kind comments and mails.

This picture was shot last Saturday evening at Queritica Gallery in Varanasi (Benaras) while the Culture Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Subhash Pandey was visiting my photo exhibtion “THE GOLDEN HOURS – A daydream in Benaras”.

With this image I wanted to thank Yogesh Agrawal who kindly invited me to show my work in his gallery which is facing the Ganges where most of my pictures were taken.
I also want to thank Swami Avimukteswaranand Saraswati who opened the show, the Culture Minister for his kind words, my friends and Indian family for their support, and the visitors who gave a significance to my work, showing that whoever we are we are all brothers and sisters.

Studies Under Way

This is another picture shot in the new workshop of my friend Durga in Varanasi (Benaras).

Those studies in progress pinned on a wall are part of a new topic about hijras, those members of “the third gender”, neither man nor woman.
Durga Charan Das is a young painter living in the “City of Lights”, he is painting amazing bodies making love or sometimes alone but always with sensuality and strength, with something special that reminds a lot of Eugene Delacroix’s work…
Durga has already won several prestigious awards in India and now exhibitions of his work are starting in Europe.

For more explanations concerning hijras you may see those pictures

My friend Durga Charan Das in his new workshop in varanasi (Benaras).

When he was a child he became famous after painting the feet of Goddess Durga’s statue in a temple nearby his family house in a village located in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.
This reputation allowed him to become a successful Art student in the prestigious “Banaras Hindu University” (B.H.U.) of Varanasi.
He is painting amazing bodies making love or sometimes alone but always with sensuality and strength, with something special that reminds a lot of Eugene Delacroix’s work…
Exhibitions with his work are starting in Europe this season.
These are a few of the prestigious awards that Durga won in India:

– 7th North Regional Camlin Art Foundation, New Delhi 2007.
– Annual Art Exhibition (F.O.V.A., B.H.U.) 2005/2006/2007.

Art for Prabhat

Posted in 7 - Events, Publications & Press with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on March 5, 2009 by designldg

Just a few more words about “ART for PRABHAT ” and a reminder for the opening which will be tomorrow evening in Delhi where everyone will be welcome.

Invitation

ART for PRABHAT

“A thing of beauty is a joy forever”

And this is truer when the journey that led to the creation is explored.

“Art for Prabhat” is one such journey for which the Art for Prabhat Shows are landmarks. The sparks of a dynamic synergy between the retarded and the genius unfold as our youngsters (shunned, ridiculed, and isolated by society on account of their intellectual disability) have at times not only created a canvas for the artist (creative, imaginative, loved and revered) to further develop into a thing of beauty but also worked with photographers and artists from time to time.

“Art for Prabhat” is an ongoing attempt to provide opportunities for society to join hands with people with intellectual challenges.

We conduct 3-4 group shows each year. Eminent artists like Jogen Chowdhury, Anjolie Ela Menon, Yusuf Arakkal, Arpana Caur, Neeraj Goswami, GR Iranna and many others have endorsed our ‘Art for Prabhat’ handmade paper and helped make this attempt to mainstream the work of these youngsters possible.

ABOUT SOCIETY FOR CHILD DEVELOPMENT

Driven by the conviction that there is a way to create a world of equal opportunities for people with disabilities, the Society for Child Development (SFCD) was founded as a non-profit organization in 1992 to establish programs and initiatives for its actualization.

In the beginning – Prabhat – a school for children with learning difficulties was launched in Shakti Nagar.

Prabhat aims to provide students with an educational and training facility that will assist them in acquiring basic living and academic skills.

At the age of 18, students transfer to the Vocational Training Center to learn market-driven skills and crafts.

Regularity, precision, innovation and creativity are the keywords at the center.

Encouraged by the enthusiastic responses an Online Legal Aid Cell was added which provides pro-bono counsel to the disabled and their families SFCD conducts research and develops accessible reports and publications for wide dissemination.

The World Bank, National Commission for Women, and Handicap International have been among SFCD sponsors.

To expand the scope and extend our reach further, in 2004, a Parent Support Network was setup to provide a forum for parents to benefit from each others’ experience and to bring home the truth that “a well informed parent makes a better parent.”

Because of this expansion, SFCD now includes a variety of programs and initiatives to promote the rights of persons with disabilities from several angles.

Beyond the immediate grasp of our projects, we hope that SFCD has touched the lives of many more, from the generous individuals who attend the Art for Prabhat exhibits, to those who use our non-toxic Holi colors, to those who enjoy seeing a cleaner Yamuna.

We hope that this expansion will enable us to move closer towards our goal of a more equal future for persons with disabilities.
