“Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves like locked rooms and like books that are written in a very foreign tongue.
Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them.
And the point is, to live everything.
Live the questions now.
Perhaps you will find them gradually, without noticing it, and live along some distant day into the answer.
(From ” Letters to a Young Poet” by Rainer Maria Rilke)

This is a view of Scindia ghat shot from Anand’s boat at dusk along the Ganges in Varanasi (Benaras).
The Eternal city allows anyone to to live one’s way into the answer…

“Take care of your body with steadfast fidelity.
The soul must see through these eyes alone, and if they are dim, the whole world is clouded.”
(Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe – German writer and polymath, 1749 –1832)

This is an other picture of a man receiving massage treatment by a brahman who is one of their friend.
It was shot at Gai ghat along the Ganges in Varanasi (benaras).
They allowed me to take several pictures and we spoke for a while about the importance of ayurvedic massage on our well being.

“Poetry is an echo, asking a shadow to dance.”
(Carl Sandburg – American Historian, Poet and Novelist, 1878-1967)

One evening at dusk I met this man walking at Bajirao ghat, I didn’t ask him his story, his expression was an echo of his life, his grief, his love…
I wanted to imagine the shadow of all that.
I tought that he must have been quite handsome a few years earlier, maybe he broke a few hearts, maybe a lady was waiting for him at home.
I took more pictures and he smiled at me on the last ones.

Into a Graceful Humanity

Into a Graceful Humanity

“We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm and adventure.
There is no end to the adventures that we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open.”
(Jawaharlal Nehru – Indian Prime Minister, 1889-1964)

This is another picture shot at Ahilyabai ghat along the Ganges in Varanasi (Benaras).
This man is one of the two friends who came to bath with the man whom I shot while he was putting his blue kurta on.
It was at dusk when the holy waters reflect an amazing light and when friendship and happiness melt into a graceful humanity.

A Feeling of Humanty

A Feeling of Humanty

This picture was shot at Ahilyabai ghat along the Ganges in Varanasi (Benaras).
This man came to bath in the holy waters with two friends and I made a few shots while they were drying and putting their clothes on.
They were happy to be there together, there was something strong all over the place, something that I can’t really explain, I would say that it was a feeling of humanity.
I felt that there couldn’t be one without the other, that those men’s humanity was bound to mine and that we could be human only all together.
And this was enhanced by that amazing light provided by dusk which is a gift for any photographer who comes nearby the water at that time.
They told me that they were pleased to see what I captured when they saw the pictures.

“I am convinced that everything has come down to us from the banks of the Ganges, – astronomy, astrology, metempsychosis, etc.
It is very important to note that some 2,500 years ago at the least Pythagoras went from Samos to the Ganges to learn geometry…
But he would certainly not have undertaken such a strange journey had the reputation of the Brahmins’ science not been long established in Europe.”
(Voltaire – French Enlightenment writer, essayist, and philosopher, 1694-1778)

This was shot at sunset along the holy waters of the Ganges at Jatar ghat in Varanasi (Benaras), the oldest living city in the world.

Happy Navratri to everyone !

The Wings of my Song

“There is nothing to stop me,
from getting lost,
anywhere at all,
if only I make a wish in my mind.
So I open the wings of my song,
I go beyond the stony wilderness of fairy tales,
I lose my way and reach some far away place,
where silence reigns.
I get to know the “Champa” flower in “Parul” grove
all in my own mind.
There is nothing to stop me,
from getting lost,
anywhere at all,
when the wings of my songs are afloat.
As the sun sets in the horizon,
when masses of clouds look like flowers in the sky,
I float away somewhere far off.
And in my mind,
I burst open the closed door, of a fairy tale home.“
(by Rabindranath Tagore)

This is another glimpse of Varanasi (Benaras), the Eternal city, shot at dusk from Scindia ghat along the holy waters of the Ganges.
A few years ago I was reading those words by Tagore, I kept the first sentence in my note book without obvious reason.
Today as time has passed swiftly, I know that there is nothing to stop me from getting lost in Benaras…
