“It is said that no star is a heroine to her makeup artist.”
(Richard Corliss – American journalist)

This is a backstage glimpse from a window into the makeup room before the show of a school in Bhadohi in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh at 45 KM from Varanasi (Benaras).
Several kids wearing gorgeous costums were waiting in line in front of the make-up artist who was changing their features in order to make them play specific characters.
This little girl was getting ready to perfom a traditional dance.
The light was provided by a single bulb from the ceiling in the room and allowed to have make a series of pictures with no editing.

A True Magic Carpet

“Imagination is the true magic carpet.”
(Norman Vincent Peale – American Protestant Clergyman and Writer, 1898-1993)

This picture was shot a few hours ago, just before sunset when there is this magic moment with a golden light.
It was an opportunity to take a few pictures of the carpet process at the factory in Bhadohi.
This young man was tufting a big piece.
It is one of the first stage of the hand tufted carpet, when the patterns are coming in shape, using specialized multi-needle sewing machines.
The machines push yams through a primary backing fabric and hold them in place to form clusters, or tufts, as the needles are withdrawn.

“Inspiration is needed in geometry, just as much as in poetry.”
(Alexander Pushkin – Russian author, 1799-1837)

The Bhadohi district located at 45 Km from Varanasi (Benaras) is the biggest carpet manufacturing centre in India.
Well known carpets from Bhadohi cover all kind of ranges from mass market to the highest qualities, they are manufactured in various styles and designs.
This is a close-up shot in the factory of my Indian family where I always enjoy to take pictures.

Warm Red Vibes

Red is the lowest of the seven colours in the visible spectrum and is known as a “warm” colour.
It is stimulating and energising.
RED relates to the BASE chakra situated at the base of the spine.
The organs to which this chakra relates are the kidneys and bladder.
The vertebral column, hips and legs are also areas related to this chakra.
The endocrine gland to which this colour relates is the adrenal gland.

On the psycho-spiritual level, this chakra relates to self awareness.
That is to say our awareness of ourselves as human beings and our place on earth.
It is the area of survival and relates to our basic human instincts of fight or flight.
Red gives us courage and strength.
The colour relates to stability and security.

Those woolen threads are drying under the sun after the dyeing process.
This picture was shot in the courtyard of our dyeing factory which is in the countryside at 45 km away from Benaras.
As we are approaching the Holi celebrations I wanted to write a few words concerning my favourite colour.

On the road from Varanasi (Benaras) to Bhadohi there is a railway crossing, I often hope that a train will come in order to leave the car for a while and to take a few pictures of the countryside which is beautiful there.
It is also fun to watch the people in other cars and trucks stopping there and to share a slice of their life.
This is a picture of the the stopping signal in Hindi which says “rukiye” which means “stop” in a kind way, close to “stop please”.
I shot this picture as a train was passing in a high speed.

“For the LORD thy God bringeth thee into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths that spring out of valleys and hills;
A land of wheat, and barley, and vines, and fig trees, and pomegranates; a land of oil olive, and honey;
A land wherein thou shalt eat bread without scarceness, thou shalt not lack any thing in it; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills thou mayest dig brass.”
(Bible)

Those woolen threads are drying under the sun after the dyeing process.
They look like a field at the end of summer in a land of wheat.
I took this picture last afternoon in the courtyard of our factory which is in the countryside at 45 km away from Benaras.
