“And what can life be worth if the first rehearsal for life is life itself ?”
(From “The Unbearable Lightness of Being” by Milan Kundera)

This picture was shot at Scindia ghat in Varanasi (Benaras) where a few young men were enjoying the freshness of dawn in the holy waters of the Ganges.

“Are you looking for gold, friend?
Look around you; anything useful to you is pure gold, pure silver!”
(Mehmet Murat ildan – Turkish author, b.1965)

This picture was shot at Scindia ghat in Varanasi (Benaras).
Two friends were finishing their daily yoga exercises in the river.
It was at dawn when reality is still foggy with a sprinkle of dreams and allows the holy waters of the Ganges to become gold…

“Hidden in the glorious wildness like unmined gold.”
(John Muir – Scottish-born American naturalist and author, 1838–1914)

At sunrise, this young man was doing yoga in the holy waters of the Ganges at Scindia ghat in Varanasi (Benaras).
He was floating as quiet and still as possible in order to find a deep relaxation.

“The only true voyage, the only bath in the Fountain of Youth, would be not to visit strange lands but to possess other eyes, to see the universe through the eyes of another, of a hundred others, to see the hundred universes that each of them sees, that each of them is; and this we do [with great artists]; with artists like these we do really fly from star to star. ”
(From “The Prisoner and The Fugitive : In search of lost time, vol. 5” by Marcel Proust)

This young man was climbing a pillar which is usually underwater in the Ganges at Scindia ghat.
This architectural element is what is left from the massive palace which used to stand there until the end of the 19th century before the whole structure fell in the holy river.
This picture belongs to a series revolving around my “search of lost time” and of the lost splendour of Varanasi (Benaras)…

“The Guru is the ocean, and all His Teachings are the river. Bathing within it, glorious greatness is obtained.”
(Sri Guru Granth Sahib, or Adi Granth, the religious text of Sikhism)

This man was having a ritual bath in the holy waters of the Ganges in Varanasi (Benaras).
It was early in the morning, the water was cold and the back lighting was providing an amazing atmosphere which can only be seen in winter.

“You will wake up every morning with a limitless reservoir of energy and enthusiasm.
All your thoughts will be focused on your definite objective…
You won’t have time to waste time.
Valuable mental power will, therefore, not be wasted on trifling thoughts.
You will automatically erase the worry habit and become far more effective and productive.
Interestingly, you will also have a deep sense of inner harmony, as if you are somehow being guided to realize your mission.
It is a wonderful feeling.”
(from “The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari” by Robin Sharma)

Very early before sunrise this lady came to Shitla Ghat in Varanasi (Benaras) in order to worship the holy water of the Ganges.
She stayed there for a long time.
I took pictures of her during the whole ceremony.
This one was shot around 7am when the sun was already very strong, she was then packing all her things with “a limitless reservoir of energy and enthusiasm”.

“Life is a specter – a spectrum of colors: changing hues from end-to-end, shifting shades at every stage.”
(Poem by Melchor (Chito) L. Aguilar from “Shifting Shades and In-between”)

This lady was enjoying a summer bath in the holy waters of the Ganges at Shitla Ghat in Varanasi (Benaras).
It was early in the morning after sunrise but anyone could already feel the heat rising up.
Her expressions were showing a wide spectrum of colours just like the sari she was wearing, all the beautiful clolors of life…
