“Composition must be one of our constant preoccupations, but at the moment of shooting it can stem only from our intuition, for we are out to capture the fugitive moment, and all the interrelationships involved are on the move.”
(Henri Cartier-Bresson – French photographer, 1908–2004)

This picture was shot at Munshi Ghat along the Ganges in Varanasi (Benaras).
After taking a bath in the holy waters this man was drying under the early summer sun just after dawn.

“I put a spell on you.
Lord! Lord! Lord!
….’Cause you’re mine, yeah.
I can’t stand the things that you do
When you’re foolin’ around…”
(from “I Put A Spell On You”, Lyrics By Jay Hawkins)

I often meet this young man nearby Nepali ghat along the Ganges in Varanasi (Benaras) whenever he comes to bath a herd of water buffalos in the end of the afternoon…

“Eros (or call it lust if you will), is like a beautiful, magnificent Afghan Hound!
A pure white Afghan Hound commanding respect and honor!
But if you take the Afghan Hound and lock it in a small cage, shun it and look upon it badly, treat it as a pestilence and wish that it would die; that same creature of beauty will become a vile, unrepentant, dark creature of the shadows!
Untrusting, hidden in the corner, aggressive… something that will harm others and yourself!
But is this the nature of the creature, is this the fault of the creature?
Or are YOU the one who has created the monster that it has become?
And this is my philosophy: that we are both corporeal and incorporeal beings, therefore, the same amount of good intent MUST be given to both our soul and our body!”
(C. JoyBell C. – Poet, Essayist, Novelist, Philosopher and Author)

This picture was shot a few days ago at the upper terrace of my office in Varanasi (Benaras) with natural light.

“When an idea exclusively occupies the mind, it is transformed into an actual physical or mental state.”
(Swami Vivekananda – Indian Spiritual leader, 1863-1902)

This picture was shot inside the akhara facing the Ganges at Raj Ghat in Varanasi (Benaras) where this pehlwan follows a daily training at dawn.
The reflection in the mirror was providing a backlighting which I always enjoy to work with…

“Our own physical body possesses a wisdom which we who inhabit the body lack.
We give it orders which make no sense.”
(Henry Miller – American Author and Writer, 1891-1980)

An inward moment with a pehlwan who was following his daily training inside the akhara facing the Ganges at Raj Ghat in Varanasi (Benaras).

“Inward calm cannot be maintained unless physical strength is constantly and intelligently replenished.”
(Buddha – Hindu Prince Gautama Siddharta, 563-483 B.C.)

A few days ago I went to an akhara early in the morning, it was a little windy like it is during those pre-monsoon days and the light was peculiar.
Somehow it was perfect for taking pictures of pehlwani training…

“Artistic temperament sometimes seems a battleground, a dark angel of destruction and a bright angel of creativity wrestling.”
(Madeleine L’Engle – American writer, 1918-2007)

This picture was shot at the little akhara (gymnasia) located nearby Scindia ghat along the Ganges in Vanarasi (Benaras).
Like many people in the Eternal city this pehlwan (wrestler) comes here every morning at dawn or before sunset in order to perform his daily physical training routine.
Since the Mughal Era it became a way of living deeply connected to culture of Northern India, this art of wrestling is a synthesis of native malla-yuddha and Persian Varzesh-e Pahlavani.
Through time Western training methods and nomenclature from Iran and Europe were introduced into Pehlwani.
Wrestling competitions, known as dangals, held in villages can have their own rules variations.

Under the Skin

Under the Skin

There is a fascination for CorpoReality maybe this is because the human anatomy is not only trying to understand what we are but it also celebrates each part of us.

And I can’t think of any other aesthetical perfection in response to this amazing complexity concerning the human body which has such a level of difficulty in solving what we are, how we operate.

The closer I come to the skin, the better I can perceive what It is there under and I can feel the pulsations, the vibrations and the undulations of life, of that life that we all share.

Photography is a great medium in order to reveal what we see or feel and what can emotionally affects us, it is also an easy way to extend what many artists and searchers did before while reaching that freedom of removing a taboo connected to a deep knowledge concerning human anatomy.

This picture was shot along the holy waters of the Ganges flowing in Varanasi (Benaras).
(These series of photographies connected to this topic are showing close-up shots from different people).

I took this picture at the upper terrace which is on the top of our office in Varanasi (Benaras) for our new catalogue regarding summer 2009.

Anand who is our favourite model is holding a cushion in white linen with an embroidery made of flowers and swirls and matching with the throw in the background (RED HALO – Summer 2009).
