Vārāṇasī (Benaras) is the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world, dating back thousands of years and contemporaneous with the Sumer civilisation.

“Benares Song” is from Kurt Weill’s opera “Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny” (1930), its lyrics are in English and performed in that language even when the opera is performed in its original (German) language.
