“Today a new sun rises for me; everything lives, everything is animated, everything seems to speak to me of my passion, everything invites me to cherish it”.
(Ninon de Lenclos – French courtesan, 1620-1705)

This picture was shot on the upper terrace which is on the top of our office in Varanasi (Benaras).
Those fashion photographies are not as simple as they pretend to be, each is dwelling with a real social work.

Among the many people involved there, Anand who is modeling for our catalogue since the begining of the company is escaping for a while his tough condition of boatman on the ganges and, using his dark colour skin complexion breaks a social taboo in India.
The fabric of this item involves handloom weavers, fabric dyers and embroiderers of Varanasi struggling with their workshops or with their lives.
Other items of the collection supply shelter and independance to a few ladies who are manufacturing them.
It is a happy chain reaction gathering people from several cultures, religions and social backgrounds and showing that we all share the same values of brotherhood.

(Throw style “Surya” – 100% wool – Collection RED HALO)
“Surya” means “sun” in Hindi.
RED HALO is a collection of household linen based in Benaras (Varanasi – India) providing work to people who were living with difficulties and education to children.

“We may have different religions, different languages, different colored skin, but we all belong to one human race.
We all share the same basic values.”

Anand shows his body knowing that each picture is decent and that this is a way to catch the attention on this fight for Human Rights and human dignity.
Since the biggining most of the viewers of those pictures leave great comments which are a real support to this campaign.
However I get a few messages and comments from some people who are intentionally backward, lacking of any insight, correct action and respect to human rights.
I want to answer them with those words by American writer and activist James Baldwin,
“Remember, to hate, to be violent, is demeaning. It means you’re afraid of the other side of the coin-to love and be loved.”

This is a woolen scarf with a aari embroidery from the Red Halo collection.
The process in order to manufacture this item involves many people who were struggling with their lives into a social program.

“MANY, many years ago lived an emperor, who thought so much of new clothes that he spent all his money in order to obtain them; his only ambition was to be always well dressed.
He did not care for his soldiers, and the theatre did not amuse him; the only thing, in fact, he thought anything of was to drive out and show a new suit of clothes.
He had a coat for every hour of the day; and as one would say of a king “He is in his cabinet,” so one could say of him, “The emperor is in his dressing-room…”
(From “The Emperor’s New Clothes” by Hans Christian Anderson)

Those rich fabrics with heavy embroideries are men’s traditional garments in North India used for ceremonies and parties.
This picture was shot at my tailor in Varanasi (Benaras).

“Suddenly I saw polka dots and moonbeams
All around a pug-nosed dream…”
(From “Polka Dots And Moonbeams” lyrics by Johnny Burke)

“Polka Dots and Moonbeams” is a popular song with music by Jimmy Van Heusen and lyrics by Johnny Burke, published in 1940.
It was Frank Sinatra’s first hit recorded with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra.
The song is one of the top 100 most-frequently recorded jazz standards with arrangements by Gil Evans and others and notable recordings by Wes Montgomery, Lester Young, Sarah Vaughn and many others.

“Every second is of infinite value”
(Johann Wolfgang von Goethe – German Playwright, Poet, Novelist and Dramatist. 1749-1832)

Every second became so important in the process of each item of our collections.
Every second can change everything.
Every second is holding the hope of women and men involved there…

“Poetry is an echo, asking a shadow to dance.”
(Carl Sandburg – American Historian, Poet and Novelist, 1878-1967)

One evening at dusk I met this man walking at Bajirao ghat, I didn’t ask him his story, his expression was an echo of his life, his grief, his love…
I wanted to imagine the shadow of all that.
I tought that he must have been quite handsome a few years earlier, maybe he broke a few hearts, maybe a lady was waiting for him at home.
I took more pictures and he smiled at me on the last ones.

“Nakedness reveals itself. Nudity is placed on display…The nude is condemned to never being naked. Nudity is a form of dress..”

Since several seasons I take most of the pictures of our collections at the upper terrace which is on the top of our office in Varanasi (Benaras) where an amazing wall is keeping traces of each monsoon and which is magnified by a natural light providing the best photo studio I could ever expect.
