“Composition must be one of our constant preoccupations, but at the moment of shooting it can stem only from our intuition, for we are out to capture the fugitive moment, and all the interrelationships involved are on the move.”
(Henri Cartier-Bresson – French photographe, 1908–2004)

Capturing fugitive moments in the streets of Varanasi (Benaras) is always a treat for any photographer…

“Dear Leonard.
To look life in the face.
Always to look life in the face and to know it for what it is.
At last to know it.
To love it for what it is, and then, to put it away.
Leonard.
Always the years between us.
Always the years.
Always the love.
Always the hours.”
(Virginia Woolf/Nicole Kidman in “The Hours”)

This picture was shot in the oldest part of Varanasi (Benaras) in a little street of Madanpura.

“Dearest, I feel certain, that I’m going mad again.

I think we can’t go through another of these terrible times and I shan’t recover this time.
I begin to hear voices and can’t concentrate, so I’m doing what seems the best thing to do.”
(Virginia Woolf/Nicole Kidman in “The Hours”)

This was shot early in the morning in a little street of the oldest part of Varanasi (Benaras) not far from the Ganges.

(Henri Cartier-Bresson – French photographe, 1908–2004)

This picture was shot early in the moning in Chandni Chowk, one of the oldest and busiest markets in Old Delhi, the city of Djinns.
This typically congested scene along Chawri Bazar makes the heart of the city always busy and full of life…

“O you who believe! seek assistance through patience and prayer; surely Allah is with the patient.”
(Quran – The Cow 2.153 )

This was shot in Delhi on a Friday at lunch time.
Several men were gathering in front of little mosque and I went to the upper terrace of a house nearby in order to shoot all this for a movie that I was doing then.
Soon more people came and it became a vibrant and colorful scene for the movie and a geometrical composition for black and white pictures.

“What is not in the open street is false, derived, that is to say, literature.”
(Henry Miller – American writer, 1891-1980)

This was shot in Old Delhi a few weeks ago, early in the morning.
There was already some heavy traffic in front of gate number three of Jama Masjid, the largest and best-known mosque in India.
This amazing and vibrant part of the city managed to keep a timeless atmosphere.
The footpath to Kinari Bazaar will make anyone fall in love with the soul of the city…

Optical Inaccuracy

“To achieve accurate knowledge of others, if such a thing were possible, we could only ever arrive at it through the slow and unsure recognition of our own initial optical inaccuracies.
However, such knowledge is not possible: for, while our vision of others is being adjusted, they, who are not made of mere brute matter, are also changing; we think we have managed to see them more clearly, but they shift; and when we believe we have them fully in focus, it is merely our older images of them that we have clarified, but which are themselves already out of date.”
(from ” In the Shadow of Young Girls in Flower” by Marcel Proust – French novelist, 1871-1922)

This was shot in a street of Bhagwanpur near BHU in Varanasi (Benaras).
Those men are carpenters, they were resting under the shade of a tree next to several tables ready to be delivered.

“We all have our time machines.
Some take us back, they’re called memories.
Some take us forward, they’re called dreams.”
(Jeremy Irons – British Actor, b.1948)

And sometimes time machines are mixing memories and dreams in the old Kashi…
Nearby Alamgir Mosque the milkman was riding a bicycle in the narrow streets of this part of Varanasi (Benaras) in order to deliver a lady who was waiting in the shadow of a door.
The summer heat was already loading down the atmosphere…

(from ” In Search of Lost Time” by Marcel Proust – French novelist, 1871-1922)

This picture was shot at the end of Laksa road at a few steps of Dasaswamedh Ghat in Varanasi (Benaras).

The Images I Know

“I cannot promise very much.
I give you the images I know.
Lie still with me and watch.
We laugh and we touch.
I promise you love. Time will not take that away.”
(Anne Sexton – American Writer, 1928-1974)

This picture was shot in the old part of Varanasi (Benaras) where all the mysteries are sleeping during daytime.
This is the place where I found my lost time….
