“Any active sportsman has to be very focused; you’ve got to be in the right frame of mind.
If your energy is diverted in various directions, you do not achieve the results.
I need to know when to switch on and switch off: and the rest of the things happen around that. Cricket is in the foreground, the rest is in the background.
(Sachin Tendulkar – Indian cricketer widely acknowledged as the greatest living batsman, b.1973)

On Sundays Delhiites gather at India Gate cricket Ground in New Delhi where girls, Boys or mixed teams, all dressed in white, are meeting for friendly matches.
You may bring your kit if you have and join a team, some cricketers may also share their bat, ball and wickets with you and you might even be asked to be the umpire.
Of course if you have a French background like mine all this probably won’t make much sense however it will still be a great show and a treat for your camera… ;)

“I could give you no advice but this: to go into yourself and to explore the depths where your life wells forth.”
(From “Letters to a Young Poet (1934)” by Rainer Maria Rilke – Austro-German lyric poet, 1875-1926)

This is the Sheesh Gumbad shot from the Bara Gumbad in the Lodi Gardens in Delhi.
During summers walking in this huge park among the mosque and all the tombs of this Pashtun dynasty which ruled Northern India during the 16th century is always a moment of bliss, mostly when come the monsoon showers…
Then clouds of birds try to defeat the sudden winds in the red sky of fire and from every corner, life is welling forth…

“What reinforces the content of a photograph is the sense of rhythm – the relationship between shapes and values.”
(Henri Cartier-Bresson – French photographe, 1908–2004)

This picture was shot inside Ali Isa Khan Niazi’s tomb who was in the court of Sher Shah Suri during his short reign.
It is at the entrance of the Mughal Emperor Humayun’s Tomb complex in Delhi.
The jali (latticed screen) provided a game of shadows and lights dancing on the wall with a sense of rhythm…

“The most difficult thing for me is a portrait.
You have to try and put your camera between the skin of a person and his shirt.”
(Henri Cartier-Bresson – French photographer, 1908–2004)

Sadanand Patil is a well-known Indian theatre actor who was trained at the National School of Drama (NSD) in New Delhi, one of the foremost theatre institutions in the world.
This was shot in the gardens this during a break between two scenes of a movie in which we were both working together.
This brilliant actor is also one of the kindest and humblest person I met.

“I prowled the streets all day, feeling very strung up and ready to pounce, determined to ‘trap’ life – to preserve life in the act of living.
Above all, I craved to seize the whole essence, in the confines of one single photograph, of some situation that was in the process of unrolling itself before my eyes.”
(Henri Cartier-Bresson – French photographe, 1908–2004)

This picture was shot in Kalkaji in the garden which is at the corner of the place where I stay whenever I am in Delhi.
By chance I saw this beautiful horse grazing the grass among the tropical plants and the benches and bringing poetry to the city…

“O you who believe! seek assistance through patience and prayer; surely Allah is with the patient.”
(Quran – The Cow 2.153 )

This was shot in Delhi on a Friday at lunch time.
Several men were gathering in front of little mosque and I went to the upper terrace of a house nearby in order to shoot all this for a movie that I was doing then.
Soon more people came and it became a vibrant and colorful scene for the movie and a geometrical composition for black and white pictures.

This is a portrait of an actor shot backstage while using a computer reflecting a soft light.
It was a quiet moment contrasting with the excitement happening all around during the “Zangoora” show at “Kingdom of Dreams”.

This was shot backstage at Kingdom of Dreams a few minutes before a performance of “Zangoora, the Gypsy Prince”.
The dancers and aerialists were ajusting their hair style and finishing their make-up.
Lynn Mascarenhas who stands on the right is also acting in the movie we were making, she is an amazing artist, she is also a physiotherapist during daytime and manages to combine those two jobs in a brilliant way.
